Mediclose Cartridge System: A Sustainable Leap Forward in Laparoscopic Surgery

Maastricht, 20-01-2025
The journey toward sustainable healthcare has taken a significant step forward with the development of the Mediclose Cartridge System, an innovative approach to incision closure in laparoscopic surgery.
Following the submission of technical documentation for the Mediclose System to our Notified Body in December 2024, the Mediclose project team has shifted gears to focus on the system’s second-generation design.
At the heart of this next-generation system lies a two-part design: the Mediclose Applicator and the Mediclose Cartridge. Together, they form the semi-reusable Mediclose Cartridge System, a groundbreaking advancement designed to reduce both costs and medical waste.
In laparoscopic procedures, multiple incisions are made using trocars, each requiring closure at the surgery’s end. Whereas the first generation Mediclose System needs to be discarded after a single use, this is different for the Mediclose Cartridge System. While the Mediclose Cartridge—housing the needles and sutures—remains disposable, the Mediclose Applicator is reusable for every trocar-site closure within the same patient.
This shift offers substantial benefits:
• Cost Efficiency: Hospitals can lower per-surgery costs by reusing the applicator.
• Waste Reduction: Disposing only the small cartridge instead of the entire system aligns with global efforts to minimize medical waste.
As of 2025, the Mediclose Cartridge System design and development phase has come to a close and verification and validation tests are set to be performed this year.
